Beam Construction Co, Inc. is a “family” oriented business now in its second generation. The company was founded in 1925 by J. L. Beam, Sr. and was operated as a sole proprietorship until its incorporation in 1953. Mr. Beam served as President of the company until his death in 1956. Tom Browne joined the company in 1954 and succeeded Mr. Beam as President upon Mr. Beam’s death. Mr. Browne subsequently purchased the assets and stock from the heirs of Mr. Beam and the other stockholders at that time. Since Beam Construction was an established and reputable General Contractor, Mr. Browne opted not to change the name of the firm. Mr. Browne ran the company until his retirement in 1990 and remained Chair of the Board of Directors until his death in December 2003. Robert Browne and Susie Lewis, Tom Browne’s children, are current owners of the company.
Susie Lewis is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering and later earned her Master in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Mrs. Lewis began working for the company in 1985 as a Project Manager/Estimator and became Vice President in 1989 and then President in 1994. She obtained her Professional Engineer Registration in 1992. Susie has served on the Board of Directors for Cherryville High School Education Foundation, Education Foundation of Gaston County, Community Foundation of Gaston County, United Way, area Chambers of Commerce, and the BB&T Gaston County Board. She is a member of First Presbyterian Church and has served as an Elder and Presbyterian Youth Connection. Susie resides in Cherryville with her husband and three children.
